Our Mission
The purpose of Self-Initiated Living Options, Inc. (SILO) is to enable people with disabilities to gain effective control and direction of their lives. SILO advocates and promotes a growing sense of personal dignity and responsible community participation through training, community development, and direct services responsive to the needs of the people.

About Our Organization
Self-Initiated Living Options, Inc. (SILO) has been providing programs and services to people with disabilities in Suffolk County since 1985. We have since expanded our range of services to include Nassau County. SILO is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, consumer controlled, non-residential, civil rights, mentoring and educational organization. SILO's philosophy is tied to the nationwide Independent Living Movement which asserts that people with disabilities have the same rights and responsibilities, needs and desires, as their non-disabled peers.
SILO is Suffolk County's Independent Living Center and one of 42 Independent Living Center sponsored by the New York State Education Department through the Adult Career and Continuing Education Services-Vocational Rehabilitation Department (ACCES-VR). There are over 300 Independent Living Centers throughout the United States and its territories, adhering to the same philosophy and providing similar services and programs to people with disabilities.
SILO has the reputation of providing the most comprehensive cross-disability related services to the disabled community in all Suffolk County. As an advocacy agency we work with individuals, businesses, and other government and private agencies to promote equal access for people with all disabilities. SILO is not a "case management" agency; rather, our focus is on empowering the individual, by educating and preparing them to advocate for themselves. Most of our staff are people with disabilities themselves, and this peer model facilitates for a better relationship between the Specialist and the individual being served. SILO's services are person-centered so individuals determine their own individual short and long term goals.
SILO encourages people with disabilities to take an active role in the community in which they live, work and play. So if you are a person with a disability, a family member or a friend of a person with a disability living in Suffolk County, we urge you to become involved in making our community more accessible to all. Individuals with disabilities are welcome to join our peer support group, or become a part of our advocacy training workshops. We welcome volunteers to participate in one of our many programs, your skills and personal experiences can assist SILO in achieving its goal of full integration for people with disabilities throughout Suffolk County. We need you to become involved.
Our History
When the process of deinstitutionalization began in the 1960’s, some people with significant disabilities were released from inevitable life sentences in nursing homes and other institutions, which created for the first time in history an opportunity, an imperative, for people with disabilities to live free and independent lives. From this, a community and a culture with history, values, and an objective were born.
Our first taste of emancipation came amidst massive civil rights movements nationally and abroad. Leaders of the disability community began to realize that our human rights and civil liberties would come only as we fought for them. With most state-run institutions closed, people with significant disabilities became more visible, and more audible, too. But society’s unwelcoming attitude did not change. The private medical industry quickly appropriated the responsibilities of formerly state-run institutions.
SILO, along with other Centers for Independent Living, were created to be run by and for people with disabilities, and offer support, advocacy, and information on empowerment in the attainment of independence from a peer viewpoint, a perspective that was hitherto excluded from participation in the discussion and execution of “services for the disabled.”
Founded in 1982 by June Roberts, Self-Initiated Living Options, Inc. believes we are tied to the nationwide Independent Living Movement which asserts that people with disabilities have the same rights and responsibilities, needs and desires, as their non-disabled peers. With the help of Frank Krotschinsky, Roy Probeyahn, Anne Pavlak, and current Board President, Mary Ann Sciacca, and others, with the support of such notable individuals such as State Senators Caesar Trunzo and Kenneth LaValle, June took her vision and opened SILO in order to provide needed resources for the disabled population.
SILO employees and other Independent Living activists carried out some of the most daring protests in American civil rights history, including the longest occupation of a Federal building in history, which led to the release of the regulations banning discrimination against people with disabilities in federally funded programs. As Independent Living philosophy took hold nationally and the Disability Rights Movement gained acceptance and political influence, a grassroots movement for a comprehensive disability rights law (the ADA) was implemented.
Today, SILO, along with other Centers for Independent Living fight similar battles to ensure that the rights of people with disabilities are protected. Even with the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, people with disabilities often find that advocacy and support from the disability community and the Disability Rights Movement is an essential element in enforcement of the civil rights law.
Many of the issues we fight for have strong opposition and powerful lobbyists in the for-profit sector.
